How to Get to Kidepo Valley National Park
Reaching Kidepo Valley National Park requires careful planning due to its remote location. There are two main ways to get there: by road or by air.
By Road
Traveling to Kidepo by road is an adventurous journey that takes you through some of Uganda’s most scenic and off-the-beaten-path regions. There are several routes to choose from:
- Kampala to Kidepo via Gulu and Kitgum: This is the most popular route, covering approximately 571 kilometers and taking about 10-12 hours. The journey takes you through Gulu, Kitgum, and eventually into the park. The road conditions have improved over the years, but some sections can still be challenging, especially during the rainy season.
- Kampala to Kidepo via Mbale and Moroto: This route is longer, covering about 740 kilometers, but offers a chance to explore the scenic landscapes of eastern Uganda, including the foothills of Mount Elgon. The journey takes approximately 12-14 hours.
- Kampala to Kidepo via Lira and Kotido: This is another alternative route, covering around 650 kilometers and taking about 11-13 hours. This route passes through Lira and Kotido, providing different views of northern Uganda’s countryside.
Travelers opting to drive to Kidepo should consider renting a 4×4 vehicle, especially during the wet season when some roads can become impassable.
By Air
